 VOICES AGAINST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN WILL BE STRONGER IN THE NEW CENTURY

A panel titled "Be a Voice Against Violence in the 100th Anniversary of the Republic" was organized in cooperation with Bursa Uludağ University (BUU) Women and Family Studies Application and Research Center and Bursa Family and Social Services Provincial Directorate.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey, Prof. Dr. Academic and administrative staff as well as citizens and many students attended the program held at Mete Cengiz Cultural Center.

3 OUT OF 4 WOMEN ARE EXPOSED TO VIOLENCE AT SOME TIME IN THEIR LIFE

Speaking at the opening of the panel, BUU Women and Family Studies Application and Research Center Director Prof. Dr. Handan Asude Başal said that violence against women continues to increase today. Stating that it is necessary to be aware of the violent crime committed against all living beings and to increase sensitivity, Prof. Dr. Handan Asude Başal; “49.7 percent of the world's population consists of women. For every 100 women, there are 101.7 men. However, one in three women is exposed to violence at some point in her life. This rate increased to 73 percent in Turkey according to 2023 data. That means three out of four women encounter violence at some point in their lives. It also ranks first among OECD countries. This figure continues to rise over the years. Colombia, Puerto Rico, America and Finland are also included in the ranking. These are developed countries, but they are countries that receive a lot of immigration. Especially immigrants from the Asian and African continents increase these rates. "Research actually shows that the most violence occurs in Asian and African countries," he said.

YOUTH CREATE THE FUTURE OF SOCIETY

Zekiye Asakaya, Deputy Provincial Director of Family and Social Services, stated that they were very pleased to be organizing such a valuable organization within the scope of the 25 November International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Underlining that they give great support to young people due to the sensitivity of the issue, Zekiye Asakaya said; “The more conscious our young people are, the better they know what constitutes violence in all their relationships and can take healthy steps to protect their rights accordingly. Raising the awareness of the new generation on this issue will bring us to much better positions in terms of building society. Young people form the basis of society. "As a graduate of Uludağ University, I am very pleased to be here today and address you," he said.

Özlem Gürgen Erden continued with the panel in which Domestic Violence Bureau Chief Suna Gün and Violence Prevention and Monitoring Center Manager Füsun Serim were speakers. The program ended after the question and answer session.
