Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Twelfth of the sustainable development goals defined by the United Nations is Responsible Consumption and Production.  The driving forces of the global economy, which are consumption and production, rely on the use of natural environment and resources and make an adverse impact on the planet.  It is still a significant challenge for compromise environmental sustainability and economic growth. It is well known that environmental deterioration followed economic and social progress in the last century.

It would be a significant step towards sustainable development to decrease our ecological footprint by changing our consumption and production habits. Some of the targets of sustainable goal 12 are as follows:

  1. Effective use and sustainable management  of natural resources
  2. Decreasing the food waste both by the consumers and retailers
  3. Environmental-friendly management of chemical substances and wastes
  4. Reducing waste generation by prevention, reuse, and recycle
  5. Encouraging the companies to adopt sustainable practices
  6. Adopting sustainable public procurement policies
  7. Sharing sustainable development information and awareness-raising on sustainable development
